Power Restored To PSE&G Customers Following Transformer Fire In Edison
EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Power has been restored to thousands of customers in central New Jersey after a massive fire ripped through a PSE&G substation in Edison on Tuesday afternoon.
About 9,500 customers in Edison and Metuchen were without power as a result of the explosion and fire. Firefighters eventually got the blaze under control and by 10:30 p.m. all power had been restored.
CBS 2's Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2-HD, saying that flames could be seen about 30 to 40 feet in the air. PSE&G confirmed that a transformer explosion caused the fire.
The station was not staffed and there were no injuries as a result of the incident.
Firefighters had to exercise caution in putting out the fire because of its proximity to other electrical equipment. They used foam to help extinguish the flames.
