EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An investigation is underway in New Jersey after multiple people were found dead in a backyard pool.
A man clearly overcome with pain and emotion was consoled outside a home on Clearview Road in East Brunswick on Monday. The home was surrounded by police, ambulances, and new neighbors late into the evening.
"It's just terrible," Jack Gallagher said.
"It's painful. It's painful," neighbor Yamini Patel added.
Earlier in the evening, Chopper 2 showed images of an above-ground swimming pool in the backyard where the three people were found dead -- a 62-year-old man, an 8-year-old girl, and her 32-year-old mom, CBS2's Jessica Layton reported.
"A neighbor heard screaming and dialed 911," East Brunswick Police Lt. Frank Sutter said. "All the deceased were taken out of the pool. CPR was done and they were all pronounced in the backyard."
But how they all died remains a mystery. Early word on the street was the members of the family neighbors were just getting to know somehow drowned.
"Above ground. It's not in-ground, so I don't know how this happened," Patel said.
"Three people drowning in a pool seems very unusual," Gallagher added.
But then, an electrician showed up, raising more questions that maybe the three were electrocuted.
"The fact that they had an electrician's truck show up shortly thereafter. It wouldn't make sense that three people just drowned right away like that. With and adult there, too," neighbor Phil Peterson said.
Whatever happened, it's a tragedy that is being felt deeply in a quiet neighborhood now full of curiosity and concern over how this could happen.
"Definitely horrible incident. I have kids, myself. Just make sure everybody's safe and it's scary," neighbor Vlad Frenkel said.
"There's no words for that family. It's very sad," Patel said.
