Officer shot woman while responding to Queens home invasion, stabbing, NYPD says
A New York City police officer shot a woman while responding to a home invasion and stabbing in Queens on Friday night, police say.
The NYPD says they received multiple 911 calls just after 9:30 p.m. reporting a home invasion and a stabbing on 149th Street near 133rd Avenue.
Officers arrived at the home and knocked on both the front and back doors for several minutes, but no one answered, police say.
According to police, two male individuals then came to a second-floor window, one of whom was visibly injured. The male who appeared to be injured told officers, who were still outside, that his uncle had stabbed him and he couldn't let police into the house because his uncle was downstairs.
At the same time, police say a woman came to a third-floor window, told officers she couldn't come downstairs and threw a set of keys out of the window.
Police say officers called for additional emergency response units and tried again to enter the home through both the front and back doors.
According to police, officers then heard screaming coming from inside the home and used the keys the woman had thrown down to open one back door, then forcibly opened a second back door.
Police say officers repeatedly identified themselves as members of the NYPD as they moved through the home and went upstairs to the third floor, where they found one male individual on the floor of a small bedroom, a second male on top of him and a woman on top of both of them.
Officers identified themselves as police and told the individuals to put their hands up, police say. The three individuals separated and the two male individuals put their hands up, according to police.
Police say the woman was holding a knife in one hand and pointed at one of the male individuals with her other hand. According to police, the woman did not put her hands up and moved in the direction of the officers with a knife in her hand, ignoring officers' commands to put her hands up.
The woman was within several feet of the officers when one officer shot her, police say. According to police, the woman fell to the ground, one officer deployed his Taser and another officer recovered the knife.
Officers provided life-saving measures and the woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was last reported to be in stable condition.
Police say the woman had also suffered stab wounds, and they do not believe she was responsible for the home invasion or the initial stabbing reported in the 911 calls.
According to police, three males who were inside the home were all taken to local hospitals to be treated for stab wounds.
Two knives were recovered from the scene, police say. No charges have been filed at this time.
The investigation is ongoing.
