Police Find 2-Year-Old Girl After Queens Carjacking

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 2-year-old girl is safe after she was taken during a carjacking in Queens early Sunday morning, police said.

The mother had stopped at a bodega around 12:30 a.m., leaving the keys in the ignition and the child in her car seat, police told 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis. The woman was reportedly buying diapers.

When she returned, the car and her daughter were gone.

Pamela, who lives near the food store, said she was awakened by the woman's screams.

"She was saying, 'Please, God, help me find my child,'" the witness said.

Cops canvassed the area for an hour and a half, eventually finding the car and the girl, who was not injured, at Corona Avenue and 98th Street, about 10 blocks from the store, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

Police believe the thief may have bailed out after realizing a child was in the car. Authorities are still looking for the carjackers.

"But, you know, this will be a good lesson," Pamela said. "She will wake up to reality."
