Midtown Babysitter Arrested After Death Of 4-Year-Old Myls Dobson
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police have arrested a Manhattan woman after a 4-year-old boy died in her care Wednesday.
Kryzie King, 27, has been charged with first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment, police announced Thursday night.
Police responding to a 911 call at the Ritz Plaza building on West 48th Street on Wednesday found Myls Dobson unconscious in the bathroom. Dobson was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital.
As CBS 2's Andrea Grymes reported Thursday, the woman who was taking care of the boy told police she had put him on the bathroom counter and left the room briefly. Police said King told them Dobson fell and landed in the empty bathtub.
Police sources told CBS 2, however, that the boy's body showed signs of abuse, including cigarette burns and bruises. It's not clear how recent the burns and bruises on Dobson were, sources said.
"Tragic death of that young boy. Horrific injuries sustained over a period of days," NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said of the case.
The medical examiner's office will determine a cause of death.
Sources told CBS 2 that King was the child's babysitter, who was in custody of the boy since his father was arrested on Dec. 19 for alleged bank fraud.
She confessed to striking the child after he was "acting out," sources told CBS 2. King claimed she struck the boy with her hands, a belt and a wire hanger, authorities said. The babysitter said she disciplined the child "for doing things he wasn't supposed to do," sources said.
Dobson's uncle, Josiah Cassar, told Grymes that the babysitter was also the father's girlfriend -- who no one had met.
"Really intelligent, really energetic -- he was a sweet kid," Cassar said.
Dobson was removed from his mother's custody after an investigation by the Administration for Children's Services for neglect in Sept. 2011, sources told CBS 2.
