The suspect was in the home for a minute before a family member returned. The suspect apparently made off with the chief's ring and left through the front door before fleeing in a dark vehicle.
The chief said he installed the cameras two weeks ago because of a rash of burglaries.
Mastronardy told 1010 WINS that of the six homes that were hit, two belonged to police officers -- his and the home of a retired police chief from Seaside Park. He said the suspects were targeting cash, jewelry and prescription medicines.
The chief's beefed up security paid off. Video from the security camera helped officers in the investigation and two arrests were made in the case Wednesday night.
"About midnight, my officer's sent me a photo of my ring and said, 'Sorry it took so long,'" Mastronardy said.
