Pedals For Progress Sends Old Bikes Overseas To Needy Riders

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – As the weather warms up, it's time to dust off that old bicycle and get outdoors, but if you're in the market for a new bike and your old set of wheels is just sitting around, there's a program bringing old unwanted bikes to needy people overseas.

Pedals for Progress is a program to fix broken down bikes and send them overseas.

"The idea is to get bikes to people who don't have any mode of transportation," Rocky Point Cycles manager Tom Borelli said. "That bike allows people to travel fives times farther and faster. That's the idea behind it."

Borelli said you can bring any bike to his Long Island store and they'll accept it and the donor gets a receipt for a tax deductible donation.

"Any kind of bike that they don't need any more in pretty much any state of disrepair," Borelli said. "You'll be helping the neediest among us."

Pedals for Progress is a nonprofit based in New Jersey.
