One In Custody After Girl, 9, Dies In Three-Car Brooklyn Wreck

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A 9-year-old girl was killed when three vehicles collided in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn on Sunday.

A 2002 Honda Odyssey was traveling southbound on Remsen Avenue when it struck at 2013 Hyundai Elantra and a 2012 Toyota Siena that had been traveling westbound on Avenue N, police said.

Rebecca Ramnarine, 9, who had been riding in the Hyundai was taken to Brookdale Hospital and pronounced dead, two other occupants of the Hyundai were taken to Brookdale in stable condition along with three occupants of the Toyota, police said.

Rebecca, an 11-year-old girl, and the female driver of the Hyundai had to extricated from the vehicle.

"I'm not angry right now. I don't know why, but I'm not angry. I'm just hurt because lost my daughter," Rebecca's father Richard told CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez.

The 62-year-old driver of the Odyssey had apparently gotten into an accident at East 87th Street and Foster Ave in Canarsie and left the scene, a source told 1010 WINS.

Police apparently tracked the man down at Remsen and Avenue L but he fled again when he was approached by officers, according to a source who spoke to 1010 WINS.

Witnesses said that the van sped through a red light on Remsen Ave.

Ramnarine said that detectives told him that the minivan driver had a suspended license.

"If killing someone is worth you driving on a suspended license that's ignorant on your part, because you take a 9-year-old life and you're driving on a suspended license," he said.

The driver of the Odyssey was taken into custody at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

The Ramnarines have three other children who are struggling to accept the loss of their sister.
