Off-duty NYPD detective stabbed repeatedly in the Bronx, police say
An off-duty NYPD detective was stabbed in the Bronx Friday afternoon, police said.
It happened at around 1:45 p.m. at East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue.
According to police, two suspects are accused of leaving the detective bleeding out in the road after stabbing him seven times during an attempted robbery before fleeing on an e-bike.
"Somebody broke into his car, he approached the guy, the guy stabbed him, he chased the guy, and that's when he collapsed," one witness said.
Police say a gold chain may have been the target of that robbery.
The detective was rushed to a local hospital, where New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited him.
"I am hoping for his quick and complete recovery. I am confident that the NYPD will identify and apprehend the suspects and that the people responsible will be held to account," Mamdani posted on social media.
"As our brother detective recovers from injuries sustained during an off-duty robbery in the Bronx, the DEA stands firmly by his side. The perpetrators may think they got away, but they didn't count on the full force of NYPD detectives searching for them. There's nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. This union will not stop until those responsible are held accountable - for our brother in blue and all New Yorkers," Detectives' Endowment Association president Scott Munro said.
Throughout the day, a heavy police presence filled the streets as investigators surveyed the scene. In the street, multiple evidence markers and what appeared to be a black backpack. In the evening, an NYPD van with photos of two men wanted in connection to the attack circled the neighborhood.
Police did not immediately say if a weapon was recovered.
As of Friday night, the detective was in critical but stable condition.
A previously scheduled NYPD news conference on crime statistics was canceled because of the stabbing.
