NYPD Steps Up Security In Wake Of Deadly Attack In Kenya
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork/AP) -- The NYPD has redeployed counterterror units around the city in response to an attack on a mall that left dozens dead in Kenya on Saturday.
There has not been a specific threat to the city but authorities were not taking any chances.
"We keep track of events across the globe as they unfold and we adjust our counterterrorism efforts accordingly. We have redeployed our critical response and Hercules teams as a precaution. There is no specific threat to the city," Deputy Police Commissioner John McCarthy said in a statement.
The State Department says American citizens have been reported injured but not killed in the attack on a shopping mall in Kenya.
Kenyan officials say the assault by Somali militants on Nairobi's top shopping mall killed at least 39 people and wounded more than 150 others.
In a statement Saturday, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf did not offer details about the injured Americans, including how many have been reported hurt.
In a separate statement, a White House spokeswoman says some staff at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya have been ``tragically affected'' by the attack. No other information has been released.
The spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, Caitlin Hayden, says the U.S. has offered its full support to the Kenyan government to bring the perpetrators to justice.
