Man with knife shot by NYPD officers in Queens, police say
NYPD officers shot a man in Queens on Monday.
It happened at around 10:25 a.m. on Parsons Boulevard between 84th Drive and 85th Avenue in the Briarwood section.
Police officials said a family member called police to report that a 22-year-old male with a mental health history was throwing glass against the wall. When officers arrived at the home, the 22-year-old, who was in the kitchen, grabbed a knife and approached the officers, police said.
"A family member attempted to restrain the male, but was unsuccessful, and the male continued to advance towards the officers," NYPD Assistant Chief Christopher M. McIntosh said.
According to police, officers repeatedly told the man to drop the knife, and backed away while continuing to tell him to drop the knife. When he continued to approach, they fired, police said.
"Officers then retreat from the area and attempt to isolate the individual by shutting the glass door that led to the living room," McIntosh said. "The armed male was able to push through the closed door and continued to advance toward the officers with the kitchen knife in hand."
Citing the ongoing investigation, police declined to answer how many rounds were fired and how many officers discharged their weapon, CBS News New York's Lisa Rozner reported.
Police said the whole thing was caught on body camera, and the footage is being reviewed by the Force Investigation Division.
It's also not clear where the man was struck, but police did say he is now listed in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital. The officers involved were not injured, but were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
A knife was recovered at the the scene.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote on social media was briefed on the shooting, adding, in part, "The NYPD is assessing the situation, and we are committed to keeping New Yorkers informed as we learn more. I'm grateful to the first responders who put themselves on the line each day to keep our communities safe."
