Tacombi is like a beach-side Mexican taco truck, except it's housed in a massive warm indoor space on a fashionable block of Nolita. All of the tacos there are great, especially their version of the breakfast taco. For $5, you get a good amount of scrambled eggs mixed with crumbly bits of Mexican chorizo, topped with a generous amount of fresh avocado. It's served all day long for late risers.
These Brooklyn-based taco makers currently run out of a stand at the Sunday New Amsterdam Market while they search for a more permanent location. But heading over to the far east side for them is completely worth it. They offer two kinds of breakfast tacos including one with egg and potatoes. Both are perfect for a pre-shopping bite before heading through the typically packed market.
Ever since Brooklyn Taco Co debuted in Manhattan, it's been named as one of the best tacos in the city. They're another place where you'll have to wait until Sunday mornings to get your breakfast taco fix. Theirs consists of soft eggs, spicy poblano peppers, chorizo, and potato, topped with melted cheese and silky crema.
Williamsburg's Whirlybird opened specifically to catch the morning taco crowd. Not only do they offered cheap delicious tacos, with or without chorizo, from 8am on, you can get your morning espresso or latte to go along with it. Chances are you need that too. For the ridiculously hungry, you can get one with double the amount of eggs and chorizo. Just be aware that they are cash only.
Hells Kitchen is home to a few really great tucked-away Mexican joints like Guelaguetza. Though it doesn't specifically say breakfast taco on the menu, anything that involves copious amounts of chorizo, potatoes, rice, and a half a hard-boiled egg for good measure, qualifies as one of the best $5 taco deals in town. Midtown West workers will be happy to know that they deliver.
