Protesters Gather In Foley Square For New York's 'March For Truth'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Protesters took to the streets in over 100 cities across the country Saturday in what's been dubbed the "March For Truth," demanding an independent commission to investigate alleged ties between associates of President Trump and Russia.
As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reports, the topic weighed heavily on the minds of the people at New York City's march at Foley Square.
"The Trump administration, people colluded with them to help Donald Trump win the election," one woman said.
"Basically he's a Russian mobster masquerading as president," another man told 1010 WINS.
Never mind the fact that the president has described allegations such as those as "fake news," people gathered Saturday for a rally and marched down Broadway. Some were cautiously optimistic about everything coming out.
A woman named Gia said she's uncertain how it will all end.
"I really don't think that Republicans want to do anything right now," she told 1010 WINS.
Rallies of this nature are typically one sided affairs, but Saturday's rally in Lower Manhattan had at least one supporter of the president.
As WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz reports, he was standing off to the side on an elevated platform waving a red white and blue "Trump 2020" flag.
Public advocate Tish James welcomed Trump's supporter, who James refers to as "Agent Orange."
"So we want to thank all those who support Agent Orange for coming to our rally today because we welcome all," she said in front of a crowd of onlookers.
Shortly after that, a big red bus with tourists passed by. James asked them to join in with the protest.
"If you're on the big red bus and you believe in democracy please raise your hand," she yelled.
There was at least one bus rider that could be seen shaking his head with his political views obviously not aligned with the hundreds of anti-Trump protesters in attendance, Smeltz reported.
A few hundred protesters also rallied against the president near one of his New Jersey golf clubs Saturday.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell applauded the protesters from the back of a red pickup truck in Bedminster Township where an effigy to Trump was covered by an American flag.
Pascrell says that the protesters have made grassroots resistance against Trump a crusade and "those of us in the Congress who appreciate it can't get enough of you.''
Activists have been gathering in the area every weekend since last month.
They're rallying at a park that's about four miles from the golf course.
