N.J. Lawyer Admits To Misusing Clients' Funds
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - -A New Jersey attorney pleaded guilty this week to directing clients' funds to her own personal use and obtaining a home through fraudulent means.
Jennifer A. Heiner-Pisano, 26, pleaded guilty Friday before Essex County Judge Peter V. Ryan, according to the county Prosecutor's office.
She admitted to counts of forgery, falsifying bank records, and misapplying entrusted clients' funds. But she will not be going to prison.
Heiner-Pisano admitted to falsifying bank statements in order to get a mortgage, paying her rent with $5,000 of her clients' money, and falsifying an $87,000 bank wire transfer form that she submitted upon closing on her home, prosecutors said.
"This was not a minor ethical lapse by an attorney. Ms. Heiner-Pisano engaged in a pattern theft and fraudulent activity. She preyed upon the trust and responsibility given to her by virtue of her profession," county Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecutor Walter Dirkin said in a news release.
As part of the plea deal, Heiner-Pisano will not have to serve any time behind bars, but could be under parole supervision for up to five years. Sentencing is set for April 19.
