Mosquito Danger Higher Than Usual In Connecticut This Year
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Experts warned this weekend that the hot weather in recent weeks could mean a greater insect problem this year in Connecticut.
As WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported, this summer, it is more than an annual plea to use bug spray before going outdoors. Entomologist Theodore Andreadis said Connecticut is coming off a particularly bad season for West Nile virus last year – the worst ever, in fact.

And he said mosquitoes carrying the virus multiply very rapidly in the kind of heat we saw in July.
"We go into those hot temperatures again with another heat wave that would certainly cause an acceleration of the transmission cycle, and it'll begin to build up," he said.
Another big concern this summer is eastern equine encephalitis, which affects not only horses, but also very young children and older adults.
Horses can be protected with a vaccine, but there is no vaccine for humans to prevent the disease – which is usually fatal.
