More Cops On The Beat On The Subways

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There are 243 new underground crime fighters in New York City.

Even though they've only been on the job for a couple of weeks, these subway cops are making a big difference.

They're busting turnstile hoppers, straphangers with weapons, and cell phone thieves.

One rider says these new cops are needed.

"You got to be very careful. You can't flash cell phones and things like that on the train," he told WCBS 880 reporter Mike Xirinachs.

Many of the new subway cops are undercover. Their focus is on crooks who steal electronic devices.

"You have to watch yourself, being a female. I always check behind me," said Jaylin, a young mom who already feels safer.

These new cops have also helped save a life - reviving a man who stopped breathing in Times Square.
