Manager Joe Girardi On WFAN With Mike Francesa

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Joe Girardi took some time to speak with WFAN's Mike Francesa Friday afternoon. Among other topics, the New York Yankees manager discussed the team's pitching situation and Derek Jeter's power struggles.

When asked if concerns about Jeter's lack of production have become an issue for his team, Girardi dismissed the notion.

"I don't think it's bothering our club," he said. "I don't think it's affecting our club. You play in New York...you have to deal with all kinds of distractions."

Girardi said that with many players in the lineup slumping, he may decide to try various things to keep players fresh. He said optional batting practice and alternating players into the DH spot were among his tactics.

Addressing the team's pitching, the manager said starter Ivan Nova threw the ball better in his last two starts and hoped it would continue.

Girardi also said there was "no sign to say" Bartolo Colon wouldn't continue to be outstanding in the rotation.

"He keeps it simple. This is the same guy that attacks you with fastballs, but he's got such great movement that hitters aren't putting the barrel of the bat on the pitches," he said.

While admitting that there were areas where the team had to "become more consistent," Girardi said the Yankees must continue to get good pitching.

"That's what's going to sustain us," he said.
