Lunch Break: Old School Italian; A Trip to Turkey
A throwback to the days long gone in Brooklyn, a trip to Turkey without a passport and a coffee shop that also whips up some delicious sandwiches in today's Lunch Break. By Yvo Sin.
Graham Avenue Meats and Deli
445 Graham Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11211

If you're looking for a genuine, old school Italian deli - this is it. Complete with countermen with heavy Brooklyn accents making your sandwich painstakingly to perfection, Graham Avenue Meats and Deli will sell you raw meat for your dinner and a sandwich for lunch while you're there. Check out the Willie's Italian Special, a sandwich so ginormous, you'll have leftovers for a snack later, too, or try the Godfather Special - slightly smaller but almost the same as Willie's - and you'll go home happy, full, with a new place to call your favorite.

Transport yourself to Turkey for lunch at Akdeniz. The menu will remind you of the Cicek Pasaji, or the Flower Passage, in Istanbul, with its selection of grilled meats and fishes, delicious appetizers like tarama (a wonderful whipped caviar spread made with bread or potatoes), minus all the cats that roam the Flower Passage begging tourists to feed them (you'll regret it if you do). Try the 'skewered ground meat' platter (pictured), which comes bursting with flavorful juices alongside rice and vegetables. You'll want to use the bread basket to make your very own delicious sandwich.

This adorable coffee shop boasts more than just excellent coffee. They also offer delicious sandwiches made with Balthazar's ciabatta, customizable with spreads like basil pesto mayo, sun dried tomato pesto, and of course plain mayo, mustard or olive oil & balsamic are also offered. Sandwiches and panini clock in at under $7, making this the smart choice for anyone in the area: add on a coffee and you'll still come in under the $10 lunch cap many people have. Try the roast beef & cheddar sandwich with sun dried tomato pesto; it will have you returning the very next day.
