Lunch Break: Burmese, Tea Or Pizza

Try Burmese food, have a great afternoon tea, or some lovely pizza to start your holiday weekend right! It's all in today's New York Lunch Break. By Yvo Sin.

Cafe Mingala

1393 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10021
(212) 744-8008

Cafe Mingala is one of the few Burmese restaurants you'll find in the area, but that doesn't mean they get by on that - the authenticity in the cuisine is quite remarkable. Start with a pickled green tea leaf salad, some of the best in the tri-state area, or the mango salad (pictured) and move on to the night market noodles with duck in a garlic sauce, or the coconut crispy noodles soup, a creamy coconut concoction that will leave you wanting more. Don't forget the thousand layer bread - though it's closer to only 500 layers, the fluffy bread will help you soak up the last of the creamy coconut in your dish. Have fun exploring a cuisine new to you - and check out their $7 lunch menu while you're at it.

The Tea Set

235 W. 12th Street

Cozy on up in The Tea Set and have a seat with one of the many throw cushions scattered around; order a cup of tea and linger over a book or newspaper (if no one's waiting, please!), soaking in the atmosphere of teahouse cum hangout spot. Enjoy the menu of numerous sandwiches, salads, quiches and wraps... but most of all, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. One of the standout sandwiches is the curried chicken sandwich on 9 grain toast; the crispness of the toast against the creamy avocado, crunchy lettuce and delicious curried chicken salad is delicious. Curry not your thing? No matter - the tea selection here is excellent.

Nick's Pizza

10826 Ascan Ave
Forest Hills, NY 11375

Nick's is the kind of place you want as your neighborhood pizza place, even though they don't sell by the slice. The pizza here is made with love, and it shows in every slice, from the scattered fresh mozzarella to the intensely flavored sauce. Every pie comes topped with fresh basil, carefully scattered across the piping hot thin crust pizza. Do yourself a favor and grab a pie today - and if you want some semblance of vegetables in your meal, add on a salad. You won't regret it.
