Long Islanders Participate In Car Free Day
SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- It's Car Free Day.
This is the first time Long Island is participating in the international event that is celebrated in over 1,500 cities in 40 countries around the world.
The day is aimed at getting motorists to leave their vehicles at home in an effort to reduce traffic and pollution as well as save energy and money.

"It's about Long Islanders taking action to have a positive impact on our environment," stated Rosemary Mascali, Transit Solutions' Manager and co-chair for the event.
Drivers are encouraged to use commuting alternatives such as public transportation, bicycles, walking and telecommuting.
Nick, of Smithtown, told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs that taking the train is the best and only way to travel to and from work.
"I don't have to sit in traffic and I don't have to worry about maintenance on my car and I can have the peace of reading the newspaper while I'm commuting in," he said.
Others say ditching their car is unrealistic.
"I work in Smithtown, live in Howard Beach so I need my car," one man said.
