Long Island Prosecutors: Twin Brothers Committed Nearly Identical Hit-And-Run Crimes Years Apart
WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two separate car crashes involving twin brothers has authorities on Long Island demanding tougher laws against those who flee accidents.
Benedict Bacayon was arrested last May for crashing his car into a pedestrian and fleeing the scene in October 2013. Now, his identical twin brother has been indicted in a similar crime, CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported.
Christopher Bacayon is charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 40-year-old man in a wheelchair last October -- just 10 days after his brother pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.
"They're identical twins living under the same household who commit the very same crime," Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota said. "The odds are astronomical."
Both are suspected of DWI, but because they fled the scenes, that charge couldn't be lodged in either case, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.
"The two brothers knew and took advantage of this defect that we have in the law," Spota said.
Spota is urging state lawmakers to strengthen the law against those who flee the scene of crashes.
"Please make the changes that we have requested over and over," Spota said.
Christopher Bacayon is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on a single count of felony leaving the scene of an accident without reporting.
His brother was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 5 years probation.
