Long Island Group Home Resident Dies After Reported Confrontation With Police

MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A resident of a group home in Middle Island is dead after a confrontation with police, authorities said.

According to Suffolk County police, "multiple officers" were treated for various injuries during the struggle Wednesday night at Maryhaven Center of Hope.

Police were called to the group home at about 8:15 p.m., when Maryhaven employees requested the resident, Dainell Simmons, 29, be transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for a psychiatric emergency.

Workers said Simmons became "uncontrollable and violent," police said.

Officers used a Taser and pepper spray during the confrontation and at some point became unresponsive.

He later died at a hospital. An autopsy is planned.

Maryhaven runs group homes in several locations. It expressed condolences in a statement, but did not comment further.

A spokeswoman for a state agency that regulates group homes did not immediately comment.
