LI Kids Brush Up On The Basics Of Dental Health

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – February kicked off National Children's Dental Health Month, and kids on Long Island are taking it seriously.

More than 1,700 children from 30 different school districts across Nassau County went to the dentist this past week to learn about dental hygiene.

"You have to brush your teeth two times a day," 6-year-old Destiny said.

The underprivileged children got to see on the dentists from Nassau County Dental Society.

Dr. Joseph Brofsky said cavities are not just for teenagers and adults, but for toddlers as well.

"I've seen two or three year olds with 20 rotten baby teeth—due to illness, due to too much sugar and sleeping with the bottle," Brofsky said.

Brofsky said children should start paying attention to their teeth at the age of 1.

"At one year, we tell them to stop the bottle and start brushing the teeth. Kids by 2 or 3 can have lots of cavities so we gotta fix those teeth," Brofsky said.
