Lawmakers Propose Safety Announcements On Metro-North Trains Before Departure, Then Every 20 Minutes

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some lawmakers want to make sure Metro-North passengers know what to do in case of an emergency.

Legislation proposed in the state Senate and Assembly would require safety announcements from conductors or a recording once before departure and then every 20 minutes, WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported. The announcements would point out the location of emergency exits and gear, such as fire extinguishers.

"It's not a bad thing for people to hear over and over again," Assemblyman Tom Abinanti told the Journal News.

Most riders in Chappaqua weren't thrilled about the idea.

"Ridiculous," one rider said. "[It's] the mother state taking over, what's it going to do?"

"It seems excessive to me," another rider said.

"I don't know where the fire extinguishers are, but I do know where the exits are. I think I'd be able to find my way out, still I don't think it would be a bad idea to hear it at least once," another rider said.

The proposal comes in the wake of the Feb. 3 collision between a Metro-North train and SUV in Valhalla that left six people dead.

If approved, the announcements would arrive by January.
