Latest Pushback Against Citi Bike Is Over Weight Limit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There have been protests and lawsuits over the location of the new bike share racks in Brooklyn and Manhattan, but the latest pushback against the Citi Bike program is over one of its rules.

When you sign up for membership, there is a user agreement that states the following in Part I, Section 5:

"You must not exceed the maximum weight limit for the Citi Bike bicycle (260 pounds) or the cargo carrier (17 pounds), and You must not otherwise use the cargo carrier improperly with regard to type of contents or any visual obstruction or riding impediment."

A city DOT official told the New York Post that this is a manufacturer's recommendation and it won't be strictly enforced.

But some say the rule is still harsh.

"I'm about 220," one man told WCBS 880 reporter Paul Murnane. "I think that's a little much."

"I don't understand. Well, 260's kind of high, to be riding a bike, but if they want people to not be obese, what's a better way than riding a bike?" said another.

The weight limit is also found in other programs, such as Boston and London.

One man, however, told Murnane that if you weigh between 250 and 300 pounds, you should start with some walking.
