Junior's Moving Its Cheesecake Baking Operation To New Jersey

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Junior's, the New York City restaurant famous for its cheesecakes, is moving its baking operation to New Jersey.

Most of the cakes and other baked goods that carry its name have been made in the city for more than 60 years. The owners said that by July, the operation will be located in a 103,000-square-foot facility in Burlington, New Jersey.

It will replace a much smaller building in Maspeth, Queens that has housed Junior's main baking operation for 15 years.

"We're currently in 20,000 square feet and we're going to go more than five times that to 103,000 square feet," Rosen said.

Owner Alan Rosen told 1010 WINS' John Montone the move makes dollars and cents.

"We basically ran out of room, our lease was up and in order for us to get the amount of space we really need to operate efficiently, we had to go a little bit outside of the city," Rosen said.

The restaurant assured customers of its four restaurants and wholesale and mail order businesses that the cakes will be as tasty as ever, if not better.

Junior's flagship restaurant is located on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn.

"We're not walking away from Brooklyn, our Brooklyn restaurant still exists and will continue to exist," Rosen told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

Junior's was started by Rosen's grandfather 65 years ago.

The business currently makes a million cakes a year, but the owner hopes to eventually double that output.
