Judge Sentences Defendant In NJ Corruption Sting
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- A federal judge on Thursday sentenced a defendant in New Jersey's largest corruption sting to 18 months in prison.
Schmuel Cohen admitted his role in laundering cash for a man who turned out to be a government witness. The Brooklyn, N.Y., resident pleaded guilty in April to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting agency.
Prosecutors say Cohen transferred between $400,000 to $1 million to people in Israel, a Deal rabbi also charged in the probe, and to government witness Solomon Dwek.
The 25-year-old was among 44 people arrested in the sting in July 2009.
