NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A vehicle was badly damaged after a manhole fire broke out near a nursing home in Queens.
It happened after 10 a.m. Wednesday on Chapin Parkway in Jamaica.
The fire spread to a Honda CRV parked on the street. Parts of the vehicle's frame have melted off and the back windows are broken, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.
People in the area described hearing a loud boom and then seeing the vehicle smoking.
"There was a lot of black smoke and flames coming out from the manhole," witness Yvette Gayle said.
"The back of the car is burnt and the top hood is open, wide open," another witness said.
Firefighters, Con Edison and National Grid are on the scene. They are working to secure the area, replace burnt out power lines underground and determine the cause of the fire.
