J.R. Smith Suspended 5 Games For Violating NBA's Drug Policy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been suspended five games without pay for violating the NBA's drug program, the league announced Friday.

Smith averaged 18.1 points, 2.7 assists and 5.3 rebounds en route to winning the Sixth Man of the Year award last season. The Knicks re-signed him to a three-year deal during the offseason.

Smith "did not test positive" for a performance-enhancing drug, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported via Twitter.

He had patella tendon and arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in July and is expected to miss the start of training camp.

"Smith's suspension will begin with the first game of the 2013-14 season for which he is eligible and physically able to play," the NBA said in its press release.
