Hepatitis A Vaccinations Continue Monday For Customers Of Bronx Eatery
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Department of Mental Hygiene will continue offering free vaccinations Monday to those who may have been exposed to Hepatitis A at a Bronx restaurant.
Employees and patrons who dined between Sept. 7 and this past Thursday at the New Hawaii Sea Restaurant, a Chinese-Japanese eatery at 1475 Williamsbridge Rd. in the Morris Park section of the Bronx, have been urged to get a vaccination. This includes those who ate in the restaurant and those who received its food through catering or delivery.
The vaccinations will be available from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday at Herbert Lehman High School, at 3000 E. Tremont Ave. in the Bronx. For vaccination clinic updates to your mobile device, text HEPA to 877877.
"We are asking all restaurant patrons and employees to get this vaccination as soon as possible," Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said on Friday. "If people experience symptoms, they should see a doctor immediately. This incident serves as an important reminder to always wash your hands thoroughly before handling food to prevent the spread of disease."
People can also visit their doctor to receive the vaccination, officials said.
Also, any leftover food from the restaurant should also be discarded, officials said.
Hepatitis A is spread by eating food that has been contaminated by an infected person. Symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea.
People typically develop symptoms of Hepatitis A infection about one month after they are exposed to the virus, with other cases ranging from two weeks to 50 days, officials said.
If people are vaccinated within 14 days of exposure, vaccination can prevent the disease from occurring, officials said.
