Suffolk Police Rescue Boy, Father Carried Out By Riptide From Beach In Hamptons

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police on Sunday evening rescued an 11-year-old boy and his father after they were pulled off a beach in the Hamptons by a rip tide.

Justyn Espiniera was swimming at Cupsogue Beach on Dune Road in Westhampton Beach around 6 p.m., but he couldn't swim back to shore because of the rip tide, Suffolk County police said.

Justin's father, Rick Espiniera, 52, paddled out to his son on a body board, police said. The elder Espiniera grabbed his son and held onto him, but the rip tide pulled both of them out toward Moriches Inlet.

They ended up between a quarter and a half mile away from the shore and were drifting southwest.

Officers from the Suffolk County Police Aviation Section found Justyn and his father and kept them in sight, and Marine Bureau Officers Robert Femia and Neil Stringer pulled them out of the water around 6:17 p.m., police said.
