Woman killed in hit-and-run in Greenwich Village, police say

The NYPD is looking for a hit-and-run driver who they say fatally struck a woman in Greenwich Village early Sunday morning.

It happened around 5 a.m. at West Washington Place and Sixth Avenue.

According to police, a 22-year-old woman was crossing West Washington Place in the crosswalk when the driver struck her.

The NYPD says the driver took off northbound on Sixth Avenue, then turned onto Waverly Place.

"All of a sudden, we saw a group of people screaming, and I saw the girl laying on the floor right here. So I immediately ran over and checked her pulse. She had a pulse, and shortly thereafter, the police came and then the ambulance," witness Corey Schwartz said. "It's scary. My first reaction was to make sure she had a heartbeat to see if she needed CPR."

Emergency responders rushed the victim to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police have not yet released her identity.

The NYPD says they are searching for a gray vehicle, possibly an SUV.
