Some Residents Not Pleased With Plan To Build Up Glen Cove Waterfront

GLEN COVE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The mayor of Glen Cove, Long Island wants to build up the waterfront in the city, but not all residents think it is a good idea.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported Saturday, people have been talking about the redevelopment of the area on the water in Glen Cove for decades.

In his reelection speech, Glen Cove Mayor Reginald Spinello said he wants the $1 billion plan called Garvies Point to be a go-to destination area.

Developers plan to break ground this spring, but those against the plan said it is just too large for the community – and traffic will be a nightmare.

The plan, as it stands, will include restaurants, parks, stores, apartments and condos.

"We have a lot of parks and a lot of restaurants in Glen Cove right now, so it's a Catch-22," said longtime resident Kevin Frazen. "It's a little too big for what the city -- it's a lot of money to put out."

The area used to be a superfund site.
