Cops: Sex Assault Suspect Who Shot At Officers On Coney Island On The Loose
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for a man who fired at officers responding to a sex assault in progress on Coney Island.
The incident happened Sunday at around 11 p.m. Cops were in vicinity of Oceanview Avenue, where a 21-year-old woman said she had been sexually assaulted by a Hispanic man in his 20s, wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. The woman said the man was also armed with a gun and knife.
While looking for the suspect, two uniformed officers observed a man -- later identified as 23-year-old Norman Vanigas -- who fit the description.
The officers pulled their patrol car in front of the suspect and tried to stop him. The suspect they ran away and pulled out a firearm, according to police.
The officers took cover as the suspect fired one round in their direction. The officers did not return fire, police said.
The suspect is described as approximately 5-foot-5-inches, 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
A $12,000 reward has been offered for the information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
