Confusion About Alleged Leggings Ban At Conn. High School Spurs Debate

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Confusion about one school's dress code has stirred a debate about what's appropriate to wear.

According to the Hartford Courant, a meeting between parents, teachers and students at North Haven High School in Connecticut will take place Wednesday night. The meeting comes over apparent confusion over a rumored ban on leggings and yoga pants.

Rumors of a school-wide ban on leggings swirled on social media, according to the report.

The principal told the paper there are in fact no plans to alter the school's dress code, and no ban is planned.

As CBS 2's Vanessa Murdock reported, leggings are all the rage right now. At every turn, women and girls are sporting them.

"They're my favorite pants to wear, I wear them all the time," Greenwich High School senior Ashley Grudzinski told Murdock. "They're so comfortable to wear."

But they can be revealing, not leaving much to the imagination.

One parent said she's seen teens wearing the tight pants in a way she deemed inappropriate at school.

"I think they need to tone it down," Valerie Olivieri said.

While no decision has been made, North Haven High School is considering a ban on leggings and yoga pants.

Executive coach and career counselor Dinah Day said students have to consider that what they wear does play a role in how others - especially their peers - perceive them.

"It's tough, clothes. And clothes make the man, clothes make the woman," Day told Murdock. "Tights or leggings or a sweater that's too tight, they might think that that's going to be a come-on and going to be appealing."

"Unless you were taught these messages when you're younger...you wouldn't know that you were wearing something that was too revealing or too tight," said Day.

Day said when in doubt, leave questionable items out of the wardrobe.
