Cables fall from Brooklyn elevated subway tracks onto cars below
Communication cables detached from elevated subway tracks and fell onto parked cars Friday in Brooklyn.
It happened at around 6:20 a.m. underneath the J line tracks at Linwood Street and Fulton Street in Cypress Hills.
Video from the scene shows the cables resting on multiple cars. Six vehicles had damage, including broken sideview mirrors.
The impact stretched across three city blocks along Fulton Street.
The MTA said subway service was not impacted, and Con Edison said there were no power outages. No one was hurt.
Transit sources stress the cables that fell were not live electrical wires.
Lorraine Marin, an employee at nearby Brolick Gym, said she could hear the sound from inside her workplace.
"It was kind of scary," she said. "It sounded like a big boom ... Like dropping a bowling ball from [the elevated tracks]."
For a moment, others feared it could've been something even worse.
"At the beginning, when it first happened, I was nervous," Brolick Gym employee Starr Melendez said. "We actually thought something was happening with the train."
Officials suspected the incident was related to the frigid weather that's gripping the city. The temperature outside was 8 degrees when the cables snapped.
Crews were seen braving the bitter cold to secure the cables. The MTA said they applied a temporary fix and will need to investigate further before coming up with a permanent solution.
Transit officials believe this was an isolated incident.
