Brooklyn Performance Artist Says Prince William Offered To Help With His Play

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Prince William and Kate Middleton left New York Wednesday morning, but their visit will not soon be forgotten by many New Yorkers.

As CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported Wednesday night, one performance artist said Prince William may just have turned his life around.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were riveted by a stirring one-man play in Brooklyn on Tuesday. The man behind it has a checkered past – and now a seemingly limited future courtesy of Prince William.

"He said that he would pay money to see this," And he asked, what am I doing with this play?" said the artist, Steven Prescod.

Prescod, 22, is a former convict. He emotionally told of his troubled youth on the mean streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn at The Door Youth Center before William and Kate on Tuesday.

Prescod was arrested at the age of 16 for assault and robbery.

"So I prayed to God; asked him to give me a second chance," he said.

The story reportedly had Prince William nearly tears, he said.

"He said, 'Who's helping you with this play?' I told him that there's a few people helping me here and there." He said, 'Oh, that's great,' and he said. 'I would love to help you as well,'" Prescod said.

The remarkable gesture was just part of a memorable royal visit to New York by William and Kate, with new details now emerging.

People Magazine reported that at the glamorous gala at the Met on Tuesday, the menu included a duo of mushroom-crusted tenderloin of Angus beef, truffle-whipped parsnips and potatoes, among other delicacies.

The royal hotel suite at the swanky Carlyle Hotel, 35 E. 76th St., reportedly went for a princely sum of $10,000 a night.

And as for Prescod, he said meeting with Prince William now represents the first day of the rest of his life.

"It gives me hope," he said.

Prescod said Prince William left him with contact information so he could follow through with making his dream into a reality.
