Brodeur Out For Devils Vs. Rival Rangers

NEWARK (AP) -- Martin Brodeur's bruised right elbow is keeping him out of at least one more game.

The New Jersey Devils goalie will miss Friday night's game against the New York Rangers because of an injury sustained Wednesday at Chicago when he was struck by a shot by Patrick Kane. He left the 5-3 victory in the second period and didn't return.

Brodeur practiced with the team Friday morning and expected to play that night, but felt a sharp pain when he tried to swat away a puck to the stick side.

Johan Hedberg will start against the Rangers. Jeff Frazee was called up from Albany of the AHL and will serve as Hedberg's backup.

"It's not pulled or torn," said Brodeur, who had left elbow surgery two years ago that sidelined him for 50 games. "I just banged it. From past experiences with bruises, usually it takes a couple of days to feel 100 percent."

New Jersey (4-9-1) recorded its highest scoring output of the season in its first win without last year's leading scorer.

Zach Parise, who had 38 goals and 44 assists in 2009-10, underwent surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus Tuesday but isn't worried about the team's lack of consistency.

"We've already got a lot of injuries, we're not playing that great, but I'm confident the guys will be fine and still pull out of this funk that we're in without me," he told the team's official website. "I am confident that we'll get things straightened out, get things figured out."

The Devils can start by picking up a win at home, where they're 0-4-1 and have been outscored 20-8.

New York (6-5-1) is coming off a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday in the first meeting since the Flyers ended the Rangers' playoff hopes in a shootout on the final day of the 2009-10 regular season.

Brandon Dubinsky's team-high eighth goal gave the Rangers the lead in the second period, but they were unable to overcome costly turnovers.

"It was just one of those games where you get all this hype about it and to me it was a (ugly) game," coach John Tortorella told the Rangers' official website. "I'm sure they don't feel that way, they win it 4-1, but to me it was sloppy offensively. They didn't have that many chances either."

The Flyers were limited to 21 shots - a season-low for a Rangers opponent - but Henrik Lundqvist allowed at least four goals for the fourth time.

Lundqvist is 6-3-1 in New Jersey since 2007-08, winning two of his previous three starts there.

Despite the lackluster effort against the Flyers, forward Brian Boyle is looking forward to facing the Devils.

"That's the best medicine," he said. "We'll go back at it (Friday)."

Ryan Callahan's seven-game points streak was snapped in Thursday's loss, but he has two goals and two assists in his last four games against the Devils, including one of each in the Rangers' win last month. He leads the team with nine assists and 13 points.
