Brien Taylor, Yankees' Former No. 1 Pick, Charged With Cocaine Trafficking
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Brien Taylor was once the talk of New York.
After being selected No. 1 overall by the Yankees in the 1991 MLB draft, Taylor was expected to take the Bronx by storm.
A shoulder injury suffered in a bar fight derailed the left-hander's pitching career and, despite a then-record $1.55 million signing bonus, he never made the majors.
On Thursday, Taylor was arrested on drug charges in Carteret County, N.C.
He faces "charges of cocaine trafficking following an undercover narcotics operation," the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News reported, after police say they "purchased a large quantity of cocaine and crack cocaine from Taylor over a period of several months."
The 40-year-old appeared in court Friday, according to WITN-TV. The station reported he's being held on $275,000 bond and will next appear before a judge on March 23.
Taylor toiled through seven seasons in the minor leagues, never pitching above Double-A. He finished 22-30 with a 5.12 ERA over 100 games (82 starts).
