Bethpage Brothers Grateful For Life Saving Action Of Trauma Team At Cohen Children's Hospital
NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two Long Island brothers who were victims of a road rage assault are praising a pediatric trauma team at Cohen Children's Hospital as life savers.
The Farhadi brothers of Bethpage showed CBS2's Jennifer McLogan scars from a New Year's Eve slashing and stabbing that could have claimed their lives.
After weeks in Cohen Children's Hospital they were thanking their doctors.
"I am here today and grateful and blessed for Dr. Rosen and his team," Mohmund said.
Mohmund, 16, almost bled to death from a puncture wound to the chest.
"Within minutes of his arrival, we discovered how desperate the situation was and we could take him immediately to the operating room and we could do life saving surgery," Dr. Nelson Rosen said.
The brothers were blocks from their Bethpage home, exiting the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway at 7:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, they were unaware that an angry motorist, Jeff Saint Gerard, was armed.
Words were exchanged, and an altercation ensued. Police said the suspect also tried to run over the victims before he pulled out a knife.
"He was behind us originally, honking and going crazy, and then he cut us off and stopped the car and got out," Nawid said.
"My brother got stabbed five times, that is where I came in, and I pushed the guy, and that is where he stabbed me, and that's where we rushed to the hospital," Mohmund added.
Their parents got the emergency call.
"This is exactly the scenario every parent views as a nightmare," Dr. Jose Prince said.
Doctors at Cohen say they can handle grave situations as the only level one pediatric trauma center in New York City and Long Island.
Mohmund's surgeon just returned from saving soldiers in Afghanistan, the country from which the Farhadi family fled.
The suspect in the assault of the brothers claimed he was not the aggressor and was only trying to defend himself.
