Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club Opens For Season Tuesday On Pier 17

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Manhattan's probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think "beach club."

Here to change your whole perception of an island staycation is Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club, taking over the former Water Taxi Beach at the South Street Seaport with a grand opening at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Named after the street that Pier 17 sits on, Beekman is offering craft beer such as Sixpoint Crisp Lager and Ommegang Witte Beer on draft as well as wine and cocktails at two long driftwood-planked bars.

Visitors can kick back in a hammock or a glowing lounge chair while sipping on drinks, challenge friends to a game of ping pong, pool or foosball, or simply soak up some rays on the sand while admiring the view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Telly Hatzigeorgiou, who is operating the beach club with former Water Taxi Beach founder Tom Fox, said the menu by chef Jason Mayer will offer "amazing lobster rolls" in addition to items such as bratwurst, fresh pretzels, oysters and clams on the half shell and a juicy La Freida burger.

And to reward you for spending your summer weekends in the city, on Sundays starting at 3 p.m., the beach club will host free indie rock concerts (bands to be announced soon) along with ticketed events throughout the summer.
