Every summer millions of New Yorkers flee the hustle and bustle of the city to the quiet of Fire Island. Food and travel writers and authors of The Fire Island Cookbook Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen know their way around a kitchen, a dining room and Fire Island itself. The cookbook includes recipes for each summer weekend, Memorial Day through Labor Day. The 14 menus maximize seasonal produce, and range from all-day cooking to easy recipes for a quick dinner.

While The Fire Island Cookbook dives into local recipes, authors Mike and Jeff also know their way around the Fire Island dining scene. Read below for their favorite culinary spots around Fire Island.

The Casino Café has been serving families of all ages in Davis Park since 1945. We especially love its Fried Macaroni and Cheese, Tuna Tartare Tower and the Bourbon Marinated Breast of Duck.  Make sure to save room for the amazing Oreo Cheese Cake.

Located on Bay Walk in Fair Harbor, Le Dock has been known as Fair Harbor's only restaurant for quite some time…but that's ok…the delectable menu suits all appetites.  If you left the kids at home, don't forget to take a pizza back for them.

Surf's Out offers fun and appetizing specials every day of the week.  We totally love Taco Tuesdays and Sushi Samba night on Thursdays. After one of Surf's Out's famous specialty drinks, The Wipe Out, you may find yourself doing just that.

Flynn's is always a fun time. After a few cocktails on the deck, head inside for dinner.  Make sure to start with the Lobster Bisque, it really is delicious.  Entrées are big and tasty too; we love the BBQ Ribs and the Fire Roasted Grouper.

Canteen
Harbor Walk, Fire Island Pines
Fire Island, NY 11782

When you walk into "town" to buy groceries and wine before hitting the beach, stop at Canteen for a cup of Jo and a snack. Pastries and sandwiches are served throughout the day, and at night it turns into Canteen-A, featuring tacos and other Mexican specialties.
