NEW YORK -- Police were investigating a stabbing outside of a school in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened just before 3 p.m. near Brownsville Academy High School at East New York Avenue near East 98th Street.

Investigators say school safety agents responded after three teenagers were stabbed off school property during dismissal.

An 18-year-old was stabbed in the chest and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, and two 17-year-olds were said to be stable condition after being slashed. Overnight, the 18-year-old victim was also upgraded to stable condition.

A spokesperson for New York City Public Schools released the following statement:

"Violence has absolutely no place in our communities. NYPD, EMS, school staff, and NYPD School Safety Agents immediately responded to this incident, which occurred off school property during dismissal. We are providing the necessary follow-ups to this school community, including emotional and mental health supports for any student who needs it."

It's unclear what led up to the attack. Neighbors we spoke with said dismissal in the area can get chaotic.

"I think they should put more police around here, to be very honest with you, during school hours, because that's only the time with the problems," said neighbor Bernadette Jones. "If I could say one thing to you kids, please stop the violence, please."

So far, no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
