NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As the eighth snowstorm of the season continues to bear down on the Tri-State Area, officials issued advisories and warnings in anticipation of dangerous conditions.  As much as a half-inch of ice is expected to fall during the overnight hours from New York City up to southern Orange County.

A freezing rain advisory is in affect for New York City and Long Island until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.  In addition, an ice storm warning for Passaic, Bergen, western Essex, western Union, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The area is expected to see sleet and freezing rain overnight.  By Wednesday morning, the ice is expected to change over to rain in the city, Long Island and on the Jersey shore.  The changeover will be more gradual north and west of the city before transitioning to rain.

The icy system is expected to end by mid-day Wednesday, but will likely lead to downed power lines and power outages by the time it leaves the area.

"The potential for ice-laden trees, tree branches, limbs to come down are there.  If there are winds...the limbs could smack into the power lines," Con Edison spokesman Chris Olert said.

Olert also cautioned that people should "treat any wire or cable that's down as if it's alive."

The northern suburbs -- Sullivan, Dutchess and Ulster counties -- will mostly avoid the ice but will be hit with up to an additional 6 inches of snow, bring their total to 8-10 inches by the time the system begins to move out of the region on Wednesday afternoon.
