Built in 1998 and designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the Harbor Links Championship Golf Course in Port Washington, NY, is a public course just waiting to be played. Pound Ridge Golf Club is a Pete Dye course, and it's priced like one, too—greens fees are as high as $210, depending on the season and time of day you play the course. An older course in River Vale, New Jersey, the River Vale Country Club's course was designed in the early 1930s by Orrin Edward Smith—a Donald Ross collaborator. With very affordable greens fees, the River Vale Country Club offers a par-72, 6,504-yard layout that was voted "Best Place to Play" by Golf Digest in 2008-2009. Most of the holes play very straight, and there is very little water on the course to challenge your swing—but watch out for those trees!
Built in 1916 by the famous Albert W. Tillinghast, the Shackamaxon Country Club course is something else, indeed. Weekend greens fees run between $75-99, and the experience is worth every penny if you can get a member to bring you along as a guest. A very long par-70 course at 6,599 yards after recent renovations, the course features Tillinghast's first island green—the par-4 18th. What a way to end your round!
