Neighborhood On Edge Following Black Bear Sighting In Wayne

WAYNE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- There has been another bear sighting in New Jersey.

The latest one took place in Wayne, a black bear was seen scaling fences and wandering through several yards.

"I looked to my right and there he was crossing the street. I jumped in the car quickly, went up, and I just saw him climb a fence," Kevin Scott told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez.

Scott and most of his neighbors said they can't believe a bear was hanging out in their Wayne neighborhood.

"Very surprised. This is a very residential area," he said.

It's not clear where the bear came from, Scott followed its trail by car and quickly snapped a few pictures with his phone on Joseph Place thinking nobody would believe it.

"He just lumbered from backyard to backyard climbing any fence that got in his way, and he was pretty timid," Scott said.

"It was pretty big. It was on the move too. it was moving pretty quickly," Marc Madison said.

Madison took a picture as the bear bolted across Apollo Drive and into Eric Friedman's yard.

"He jumped that fence over there which is five feet high. He came over there. He was sitting there and then I think he jumped over that fence," Friedman said.

Friedman said he was relieved his dog Stanley wasn't running around his backyard when the bear decided to pop in.

He and the Scotts are keeping a close eye on their dogs now.

"To think that the bear is like lumbering over these six foot fences, it's really scary," Barbara Scott said.

Georgette Fleming said she's more concerned about the neighborhood kids.

"I was very much worried about the children because they play here all the time," she said, "I think it's dangerous. I think the bears are more scared of us than we're scared of the bear."

Wayne police said the bear is still on the loose. There haven't been any other sightings since this morning. People in the neighborhood said as exciting as today was, they hope the bear doesn't come back.

There was another bear sighting on Saturday in Oakland. A 7-year-old boy was with a group of hikers when he said he saw the bear in the Ramapo Mountain State Forest.

On Sunday, state wildlife officials set a trap for the bear.
