Can Elizabeth Warren broker peace between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders?

Elizabeth Warren's name doesn't usually come to mind when Washington looks for peace brokers, but Senate Democrats are reportedly hoping that's a role she'll take on -- to mediate between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders and their supporters..

"I think Elizabeth can and will be very helpful," Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, a Clinton supporter, told The Hill after speaking to Warren on Wednesday. "She is very interested, at least in my conversations with her, in doing everything she can to help get the party to unite for November."

Warren, a first-term senator who represents Massachusetts, is a popular figure among Democratic base voters and likely appeals to many of the independents supporting Sanders.

Several Democratic senators have approached Warren, who represents Massachusetts, about how she can help unite the party, The Hill reports.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, who is a possible running mate for Clinton, said he thinks Warren will eventually back the former secretary of State.

"I feel fairly confident that she will endorse Hillary in her own time, that will help," Kaine told The Hill. "Her validation of Hillary at the right time will help bring everybody together," he added of Warren."

While Warren has so far withheld an endorsement in the Democratic race, she has been a staunchly vocal critic of Donald Trump. Both she and the presumptive GOP presidential nominee have engaged in tense fights on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the Democratic National Committee blasted out an email to its members that said, "Last week, Senator Elizabeth Warren told it like it is about Donald Trump." The subject line said, "Elizabeth Warren is in -- are you?"

Meanwhile, the Democratic race has transformed into a bitter, divisive contest. The 2008 race was also nasty and the question now is whether Democrats can unite as they did eight years ago.
