The Minnesota Wild have used their limited space under the salary cap to sign defenseman Keith Ballard and re-sign defenseman Jared Spurgeon. The contracts were completed Friday.
This Fourth of July for the Minnesota Wild was a little less eventful than the last.
The Minnesota Wild have waived defenseman Tom Gilbert. The team announced the move Wednesday. The 30-year-old Gilbert had one season left on his contract for $3 million. If he goes unclaimed by another team, the Wild will use one of their two available compliance buyouts to keep Gilbert's money from counting against their salary cap. He would then become an unrestricted free agent Friday, eligible to sign with any team except the Wild.
Almost a year to the day Ryan Suter signed a long-term contract to come to the Minnesota Wild, he received one of the top honors in NHL hockey. Suter was named Wednesday to the 2012-13 NHL First All-Star team as one of the top defensive players in professional hockey.

It's a direct result of the way he's approached his battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), and the way he's inspired others as a result. When Josh Harding was told he had MS last fall, one of the hardest parts was telling other people. "It was tough. I didn't know how to do it, I didn't know how everybody would kind of view me after that. But I'm glad that I did," Harding said.
The Minnesota Wild re-signed left wing Stephane Veilleux to a two-year, two-way contract Wednesday. The 31-year-old Veilleux played most of last season with Houston in the AHL. As a late call-up for more energy for the fourth line, he appeared in two of Minnesota's playoff games against Chicago. The two-way contract means he'll have a lesser salary if he's in the minors. The Wild have moved their AHL affiliate to Iowa for the 2013-14 season.
Now that the Wild's season is over, the players assumably have a lot of time on their hands. They took a few weeks off and are back in the grind of working out and preparing to condition for the next season.
Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom has undergone sports hernia surgery. The team announced that Backstrom's operation went as planned on Thursday morning in Philadelphia. The procedure was done by Dr. William Meyers.
