Wounded Vet Gifted Tank-Like All-Terrain Power Chair

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A wounded veteran got a special gift this morning in Minneapolis -- a customized, all-terrain power chair.

Kevin Hanrahan lost his left leg in Afghanistan, and sustained other injuries as well. The power chair will allow him to enjoy hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities.

After almost three years at Walter Reed Military Medical Center, Hanrahan was looking forward to once again going wherever he wants.

"Being able to kind of get out in the woods and have a little bit more freedom again, it really makes all the difference, not just to me, but to a lot of other service members," he said.

Hanrahan and his wife Whitney Hanrahan have ten acres in Wisconsin.

"I see my husband hurting all the time, and when he goes out into the woods, he has to walk out there. And then he comes home and then I have to take care of him for a week straight, because he can't walk at all by the time he gets home," Whitney Hanrahan said.

The couple hopes to start a program to get other wounded vets out hunting and fishing, vets who also have the tank-like chairs.

"I've got a buddy down in Georgia; he put a trailer hitch on the back of his and he'll trail stuff around the property with it," Kevin Hanrahan said.

The Action TrackChair was provided by U.S. Bank and Freedom Alliance.

"It's a whole lot of fun, because what we're doing is providing this all-terrain wheelchair to a wounded veteran who sacrificed his leg in Afghanistan, sacrificed for our security," Tom Kilgannon, with the Freedom Alliance, said.

Another organization, Homes for our Troops, is helping the Hanrahans build a new home on their land in Wisconsin.
