4 people killed, 11 others injured in Chicago weekend shootings, CPD says

At least four people were killed and 11 other people were hurt in weekend shootings across Chicago as of Saturday, according to police. 

The ages of the victims range from 16 to 57. Among those shot were two Chicago police officers, one of whom died.

Shootings from Friday

In the first shooting of the weekend, a 33-year-old man was outside around 11 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Vincennes Avenue when he heard gunshots and felt pain. The victim was hit in the left leg by the gunfire and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. 

No other injuries were reported.

Within the same hour, around 11:36 p.m., a 41-year-old man was walking in the 500 block of West 44th Place when a dark colored SUV approached, and someone inside shot at him.

The victim was shot in the left arm and was also taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. The offending vehicle fled in an unknown direction.

Shootings from Saturday

  • At 2 a.m. in the 1800 block of West Maypole Avenue, the victim, a 49-year-old man, told them that he was outside when he heard a loud noise and then felt pain. The victim was shot twice in his right leg and self-transported to Rush Hospital in serious condition.
  • Just before 11 a.m., one Chicago police officer was killed and a second was critically wounded when a prisoner who was receiving treatment opened fire inside Swedish Hospital in Lincoln Square. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said a 38-year-old officer and 10-year veteran of the department, identified as John Bartholomew, was killed in the shooting. A 57-year-old officer and 21-year veteran of the department was critically wounded. The suspect was arrested following a SWAT standoff just blocks away from the hospital.
  • At 5:08 p.m., a 20-year-old man got into a quarrel with another man of the same age in the 3100 block of North Nottingham Avenue. The second man took out a gun and shot the first in the chest. The first man was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died. The second man was taken into custody.
  • At 9 p.m., a man of an unspecified age was seated in a car in the 1200 block of West 87th Street when two men got out of a gray sport-utility vehicle and opened fire before fleeing. The victim was shot in the right arm and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.
  • At 9:25 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was outside in the 9900 block of South Oglesby Avenue when someone came up and fired multiple shots at him. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left knee.
  • At 10:50 p.m., a 46-year-old man was standing outside in the 5200 block of North Broadway when unknown people came up on foot, took out guns, and shot him. The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition with a gunshot wound to the back.
  • At 11:45 p.m., a 23-year-old man was sitting in a parked car in the 2500 block of West 63rd Street when a vehicle came up someone in it demanded his belongings. The person in the second vehicle then took out a gun and shot the victim in the left thigh. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.

Shootings from Sunday

  • At 8:48 a.m., a 29-year-old man was walking outside in the 2700 block of West Thomas Street when a man in a silver vehicle shot him, police said. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 4:44 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Corliss Avenue, police said a 27-year-old woman and another unknown woman were fighting when the unknown woman shot the victim. The victim was shot in the stomach and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition.
  • At 9:25 p.m. in the 4700 block of Pulaski Road, a 43-year-old man was in his vehicle when a grey-colored sedan approached him. A person from inside shot at the victim's vehicle before fleeing southbound on Pulaski. The victim was shot in the left thigh and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 10:09 p.m. in the 12100 block of South Harvard Avenue, a 20-year-old man and another man, whose age was not released, who was also a passenger, were inside a black sedan that crashed into a tree. The 20-year-old had gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The passenger also suffered a gunshot wound to the body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
